Description: Trio’s youngest jazz artist, Paul Shinn, departs for graduate school at the University of North Texas after his performance tonight. For the next two years he will be working on a Master’s Degree in Jazz Performance.

We have planned a special send off for him & hope you will join us in wishing him well.

Paul has played with us over the past 6-8 months on Wednesday evenings. His teacher at UMKC, Bram Wijnands, who often subs for Paul, will be taking over the regular spot. Bram is a fixture of Kansas City Jazz and we are thrilled to have him on our regular entertainment roster.

Description: It’s hot, hot, hot!    Typical for the season, also known as the Dog Days of Summer.   Known from ancient times, this blisteringly hot period was named in part for the the Dog Star which appeared in the heavens at sunrise near to the over-heated mid-Summer Sun.  So, why not celebrate and support a great charity, the Friends of Half Way Home who work to encourage animal adoptions and reduce the number of abandoned animals which must be euthanized.

Pooches Punch

As one of our fund raising efforts we have created [well Valdez did] a refreshing cooler - Pooches Punch - to help you forget the dogged heat. Mixed up with plum-infused Vodka, a Caribbean spiced syrup [called Falernum - almond & vanilla notes], fresh OJ, white grape juice & orange bitters - it’s a thirst quencher!  A perfect way to beat the doggone heat!

YouthFriends is a nationally recognized and rapidly growing school-based mentoring network involving more than 70 school districts across the states of Missouri and Kansas.

YouthFriends Greater Kansas City currently comprises more than 30 school districts in the bi-state Greater Kansas City metropolitan area. It is the result of a six-school district pilot launched by the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation in 1995. The field experience gained from the pilot led to the development of a complete operating system to assist future school district partners. Ongoing input from YouthFriends school district personnel, volunteers, parents and students continues to shape and refine the initiative.

Their mission is to connect students, teachers and schools with inspiring mentors and real-world learning experiences to promote success, encourage healthy behaviors and build stronger communities.

Rabicoff spent the past 11 years as the Vice President of Development for KCPT Public Television. Prior to her work at the station, she was the Director of Marketing for The Barstow School where she founded and coordinated “The Barstow School Organic Farmers’ Market and Chef Series.”  Bonnie has worked in the television medium for over 20 years…Serving as a producer and host for several community channels. Her programs have given a voice and platform for issues ranging from education and the arts to social service and cooking.

Dimensional multi-media work by David Gross

Description: Trio’s partnership with Hilliard Gallery continues with an exhibit of recent works by KC artist, David Gross. With over 30 years experience, his award winning imagery is known for its depth and intensity of color.

David continues to approach each new canvas as a pristine world in which to place his mark. Just as a writer faces a blank page, an artist faces a blank canvas, and according to Gross, “There is nothing more terrifying or exciting than this blank space.” , David paints simple, straight-forward subjects in a visually simplified manner: landscapes, floral landscapes, still-life. “I’ve traveled throughout the United States painting nature, striving for simple clarity and equiste color.”

With an BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute, an MFA from Indiana University, and subsequent studies at the Skowhegan School of Painting in Maine, David prefers to paint straightforward subjects—landscapes, still life studies, floral landscapes—in a visually simplified manner, striving for clarity and exquisite color. Strongly influenced by the Fauve movement of the turn of the century; Gross journeys into the world of abstract expressionism creating in his works a balance between the organic reality of the “place” and “non-representation” by juxtaposition of geometric shapes, layers of texture and bold color.

Kathleen & Frenchie

Description: If it’s background music you’re after, we’d like to suggest the mall. Kathleen [KK to her friends] and Frenchie perform songs to listen to – music that will have you put down your fork, pat your knee to the beat, share a smile with your date and really concentrate on the lyrics. The harmonies are so beautiful you’d swear the two are sisters.

Frenchie – who is also a skilled guitarist – offers a sweet folk sound that’s a perfect complement to Kathleen’s strong vocals that range from soulful blues to a sexy growl. The music choice is a mix of tunes you grew up on, like their bring-down-the-house version of Landslide to Folsom Prison and a rousing Proud Mary that’s become their signature song. But Kathleen and Frenchie also do contemporary pieces in their own style, turning Kings of Leon’s Use Somebody into a ballad of raw emotion and longing. And isn’t that what music is all about?

Trio is thrilled to host this special Wednesday evening late night event, 8-11 PM on June 23rd.
